That magical time of year when humans pause holiday shopping, burnt cookies, and questionable family group texts to remember something truly beautiful: Animals feel. They feel joy, comfort, stress, fear, curiosity, and affection.
And the best part? The world is finally catching up. Countries everywhere are updating their laws to recognize what we've always known: Animals are sentient beings with real emotions and real inner lives – just like us. Here's the hopeful progress happening globally and right here at home: | | More than 40 countries now legally recognize animal sentience – including the UK, EU, New Zealand, Switzerland, Australia, France, and Quebec. Lawmakers must consider an animal's emotional experience when creating policies. A huge win for compassion (and for any animal who has ever rolled their eyes at us). | | The U.S. doesn't yet have a federal law using the magic word "sentient," BUT states are stepping up in major ways. States acknowledging animal sentience or emotional capacity include: Oregon, Vermont, Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Montana, Massachusetts, California, Maine, and Washington D.C. Fun fact! Oregon was an early leader, passing legislation in 2013 stating that "animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, stress, and fear" and even ruled that harming multiple animals counts as multiple crimes – not one. These changes strengthen anti-cruelty laws, raise awareness, and slowly shift animals out of the "property" category and into "living beings who deserve real protection." | | New York City is stepping up in a big way. The city has proposed legislation that would officially recognize animals as sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, fear, and stress – and it would require lawmakers to actually consider an animal's emotional life when creating new policies. In true New York fashion, the bill also turns to the rest of the state and says, "Your turn," urging the New York State Legislature to adopt the same standard. (Go big or go home, as the pigeons say while aggressively staring you down for your bagel.) At the same time, NYC is working to protect its most iconic employees: the legendary bodega cats. A separate bill, Intro 1471, would finally give these furry night-shift heroes the legal status they deserve by classifying them as "working animals." That means they could officially stay in stores without owners facing fines, and they'd receive free vaccinations along with spay and neuter services to keep them safe and healthy. Honestly, for everything they do – rodent control, customer service, morale boosting – they deserve health benefits, paid time off, and tiny little 401(k)s too… but we'll take this as a strong start. | | Every law that acknowledges animal emotions brings us closer to a world built on empathy instead of convenience. And every cruelty-free choice you make helps push that compassion forward. Even small acts of kindness ripple outward – and animals feel it. | | You know, I gotta be honest… I feel hopeful about this week's Weekly Nut report. I have a feeling you humans are really going to get it together. And we animals fully support all this sentience recognition. In fact, Nutasha has informed me that she would like to be recognized specifically as a: "Sentient, Emotionally Complex Forest Princess with Unlimited Snack Rights and Diplomatic Immunity." She also wants a tiny crown, a tiny sash, and a law that states I must give her 70% of all acorns I collect "for administrative purposes." Oh, and if you see her today, tell her she's doing amazing things for animal rights. (Please. I promised I'd say that.)
