All Creatures Great, Small, and Slightly Weird Deserve Love. This upcoming week marks World Day for the End of Speciesism- a global reminder that cows and cats, rats and raccoons, pigs and parrots all have something in common: they matter. They feel. They bond. They dream (scientifically proven, we checked). And every one of them deserves compassion-not just the cute, fluffy, or Instagrammable ones.
We're not saying invite a mosquito to brunch. We're just saying let's rethink who we value, and why.
So today, we're spotlighting animals that are often dismissed, feared, or judged unfairly- creatures with bad reputations, weird vibes, or PR issues that have nothing to do with who they really are.
Because if interspecies friendships have taught us anything, it's that the best hearts don't always come in familiar packages. | | We've said it before, but it's worth repeating: Remy and Emile, two rescue rats in Brooklyn, literally help raise kittens. They cuddle, groom, and teach baby cats how to play nice. Meanwhile, lab rats- who've helped develop countless medical breakthroughs- still get none of the love and all of the fear.
Lesson: Just because they have a tail doesn't mean they don't have a soul. | | Pigs can recognize themselves in mirrors, play video games with joysticks (look it up), and form lifelong friendships. And yet they're usually associated with bacon or mud.
Fun fact: Winston Churchill once said, "Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." The man was onto something. Lesson: Don't underestimate someone just because they grunt when they're excited. | | They don't blink. They don't cuddle. But some of them wear tiny hats on Instagram, and that has to count for something. Snakes regulate ecosystems, control pests, and in many cultures, symbolize transformation and healing. They are not out to get you. (Okay, except maybe that one in your nightmares.) Lesson: Fear doesn't justify cruelty. Learn before you hiss. | | Cows have best friends. They get sad when they're separated. They love music, they hold grudges, and they've been known to form deep bonds with humans, pigs, dogs, and yes- even ducks. If you've ever looked into the eyes of a cow and felt something ancient staring back, congrats: you get it. Lesson: You don't need to ride a horse to connect with a pasture pal. | | Trash pandas get a bad rap, but raccoons are clever, curious, and weirdly elegant when washing food. And while they might occasionally scream outside your window at 3am, they're just trying to make it through this life like the rest of us. Lesson: Don't judge a book by its rabies warning. | | - Adopt the Unusual Next time you're thinking of adopting, consider the "less popular" pets: senior cats, black dogs, rats, reptiles, bunnies, or bonded pairs. Every species deserves a shot at love (and snacks). - Rethink Language Words matter. Calling animals "pests" or "vermin" can influence how we treat them. Try using more compassionate terms- "urban wildlife," "curious raccoon," "emotionally unavailable goose." - Learn, Don't Fear Afraid of snakes, spiders, or opossums? (Fair.) But fear doesn't mean hate. Watch a documentary, follow a rescue account, or listen to someone who loves them talk. It's harder to hurt what you understand. - Vote With Your Wallet Support sanctuaries, cruelty-free brands, and ethical food systems. Every purchase is a tiny vote for the world you want to live in. (Also, oat milk is delicious.) - Be the Weirdo Who Cares Speak up. Share the story. Defend the rat. Love the unloved. You never know who's listening- or who might just see animals differently because you were brave enough to say, "Actually, snakes are kinda cool." | | Well that's this Week's Nut!
Nutasha and I once rescued a pigeon named Clive who wore a bread bag as a cape and insisted on following us home. People said he was "just a bird." But Clive was brave. Loyal. Slightly unhinged. And absolutely unforgettable. This weekend, we challenge you to look at every creature- feathered, furred, scaled, shelled, or squishy- and ask: What if they mattered as much as we do? Because they do. Your Friend, | | The "Currently hand-feeding grapes to a retired garden snail named Bernice" Squirrel. | | Wait… Really? You're already looking for the Unsubscribe. button? Well, just know we have a pigeon army, and they WILL find you. But go ahead… Hit that button and see what happens.
