Despite serving in the military for a 35-year period that spanned both world wars, Dwight D. Eisenhower never saw active combat. After he graduated from West Point in 1915, he was stationed at Camp Colt near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as well as various other U.S. bases during World War I. He was eventually scheduled to deploy to France on November 18, 1918 — exactly one week after the Armistice was signed, ending both the war and any chance of the future president seeing combat in it. During World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force and was hailed for leading the successful Allied campaign in Europe. He didn’t see combat in that conflict, either, serving in a high-level command role rather than fighting in the field. |
