Today: why miles don't tire your dog out, plus 2 surprising truths (one about the leash, one about treats) that do.

 |
|
Hey friend, ever walk your dog for an hour, come home, and they're still bouncing off the walls? You're not doing anything wrong. Most of us were just never told this: a longer walk mostly builds a fitter dog. What actually tires them out is their brain.
Sniffing, thinking and earning little rewards is real work for a dog. A slower, sniffier 20 minutes can leave them sleepier than a fast lap around the block. Two things make that walk happen, and both work the opposite of how you'd expect.

THE BIG IDEA
It's not the miles that tire your dog out. It's the sniffing, thinking and earning.
Here's what that means on the leash, and in your pocket.

🐕 ON THE LEASH
SURPRISING TRUTH #1
A loose leash tires your dog out more than a tight one.
A tight leash turns the walk into tug-of-war. Your dog spends the whole time pushing against the pressure, nose up, wound up. A loose leash lets their nose go down, and that's when the brain work starts.
Try it: give the first five minutes to the nose. Let them pick the pace and the bushes.
The harness part: a comfy no-pull harness keeps pressure off the neck and turns a pull into a gentle redirect, so the leash can stay loose. Fit check: two fingers under every strap.

🦴 IN YOUR POCKET
SURPRISING TRUTH #2
A smaller treat works better than a bigger one.
Your dog counts how often a reward comes, not how big it is. One big biscuit is one moment of thinking. Break it into ten pea-sized pieces and you get ten moments of “what do I do to earn the next one?”
Try it: every time your dog looks back at you on their own, mark it with a tiny piece. They'll start checking in more.
The treat part: keep all treats under 10% of daily calories (the rule vets go by). When pieces are that small, what's in them matters, so one ingredient and no fillers is the way to go.

Try it this week
Days 1–2: five minutes of sniff time at the start. Days 3–4: add a tiny reward for every check-in. Day 5 on: notice how much calmer the evening is.
