Yesterday afternoon, someone walked up to the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, spray-painted "Clean hands, dirty money" across it in bright pink, and dumped enough soap into the fountain to fill it with bubbles. The phrase possibly alludes to accusations of Trump administration corruption. |
Park Police shut the site down. Before they did, people were playing in the foam. A woman was arrested and charged today, and we don’t yet know the motive for her shameful act. |
But we don’t need an exact motive for it to mean something profound about what’s happening in our country. Over 400,000 American heroes died winning that war. Someone turned this sacred memorial into a punchline for an afternoon, and even those passing by joined in. |
This isn't an isolated incident either. We’re seeing a pattern emerge of growing disrespect for our country, increasingly, but not exclusively, on the political Left: |
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic Socialist of America candidate Zohran Mamdani personally backed, who just won her congressional primary in New York, once wrote online: "I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me." Zohran Mamdani, in his speech marking America's 250th birthday, told the country that "patriotism is every act of righteous dissent" — rejecting the idea that loving this country and defending it might actually mean something on its own. Abdul El-Sayed, now the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, called in a deleted video for Fourth of July fireworks to be scrapped, tied football to slavery, and said the Second Amendment should be replaced with a "right to healthcare." Tucker Carlson praises Islam and Gulf monarchies governed by Sharia law as more "advanced" than American cities, while those same countries ban churches and synagogues. He has also blamed America for entering World War II and defended his guest’s assertion that Winston Churchill, not Hitler, was the main villain of the war.

And it's showing up in the numbers: Gallup's latest poll found only 33 percent of Americans now say they're "extremely proud" to be American — down from 52 percent a decade ago. |
