Why shame hurts so much.

The old saying about sticks and stones… isn’t true. Your brain treats emotional wounds the same as physical pain. Here’s what to do about it:

,
This stopped me in my tracks.
When someone experiences deep shame, the brain can activate the same pain and threat systems it uses when it believes that you are in life-threatening danger.
The brain can’t tell the difference.
Think about what that means.
And don’t get this confused with guilt. Guilt says:
"I did something bad."
But shame says:
"I AM bad."
And that's a very different message for your brain.
Maybe you made a mistake years ago and still punish yourself for it. Or maybe someone made you feel small, unwanted or unworthy.
However it manifests, shame is one of the most devastating emotional wounds because even if you've accomplished wonderful things in your life...
There could still be a little voice somewhere inside whispering:
"If they really knew me..."

You see, shame can hide incredibly well.
Behind achievement.
Perfectionism.
People-pleasing.
Even confidence.
And here's the part that really matters:
You cannot shame yourself out of shame.
You can't simply order your brain to stop feeling something it learned long ago.
That's why we created something very different. Something that helps where nothing else can reach.
I want you to see what we discovered about shame - and the other three emotional wounds that so often accompany it.

It’s time to get out from under shame’s shadow.
With love,

P.S. The opposite of shame isn't confidence. It's worthiness. And you deserve to feel it. See how right here.
