When the college basketball transfer portal opened last month, it was clear Tennessee was preparing to go all in on its roster. Rick Barnes was committed to returning for the 2026-27 season, and the Volunteers’ checkbook was ready to rip.
That was the expectation going into April. The result has even surprised some on Rocky Top. “Every bit of this is because we have an alpha coach,” a source told On3's Pete Nakos.
As the portal season winds to a close, Tennessee and Louisville have emerged as two of the most aggressive spenders in college basketball this offseason, headlining a market that's reached a staggering new threshold. Texas coach Sean Miller said he believes 20 to 25 teams are spending upward of $20 million on their rosters.
The Volunteers landed On3's No. 1 overall transfer Juke Harris, with sources saying he is expected to make upward of $4 million next season, pushing Tennessee's portal class to over $18 million. Four hours northwest, Louisville was equally aggressive. The Cardinals landed Kansas big man Flory Bidunga for over $5 million and Oregon guard Jackson Shelstad for over $2 million, with the Cards' roster already over $18 million and expected to surpass $20 million.
Tennessee and Louisville aren't alone when it comes to spending big. Nakos has the intel below on which other programs are among the biggest spenders in this year's college basketball portal.
