01 An AI designed a drug that reverses aging |
A drug designed entirely by AI made people biologically younger in a human trial. For background, the drug, rentosertib, was built by Insilico Medicine to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that scars the lungs.
In a placebo-controlled trial of 42 patients, the ones taking it scored 3 to 4 years younger on blood tests that estimate biological age, how old the body actually is, not how many years you have lived. One test put it at 6 years. The results ran in Nature Biotechnology. It was built for the lungs. It moved the clock. |

02 The catch in your chlorinated tap water |
The chemicals that form when tap water is chlorinated are tied to more cancer in women. A new JAMA study followed 53,100 women for 25 years and measured two byproducts that appear when chlorine reacts with organic matter in water, trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.
The women exposed to the most had 18 to 23% more uterine cancer than the women exposed to the least. Chlorine is what makes the water safe to drink. Nobody was watching what it leaves behind. |

03 What the dementia risk list leaves out |
Astonishingly, the 2024 Lancet Commission leaves infection off the list of causes for dementia. For background, the Lancet Commission is a panel of the field's leading dementia experts that periodically publishes the definitive report on what drives the disease. It blames 14 risk factors for 45% of dementia, and not a single one is an infection.
A 2026 analysis found infections alone could explain 19 to 31% of Alzheimer's cases, and up to half when counted with other risks. One culprit it names is the bacterium behind gum disease, treatable in a dentist's chair. A fixable cause, and it is not on the list. |

04 Sanders brings his fight to Big Food |
Back in July, Sanders advanced an ultraprocessed foods bill out of his Senate committee. It would put FDA warning labels on ultraprocessed foods and sugary drinks and ban junk food ads aimed at kids. So we looked at his health record.
Most of it is about prices and corruption, not food. Medicare for All. A $35 cap on insulin. Drug company CEOs hauled in to defend their prices. For decades his target has been corporate power in health care. A bill going after Big Food and the ads it aims at kids fits that pattern. |

Three days of heavy drinking spiked liver fat, then 10 sober days undid it. When 15 adults drank hard at a 3-day festival, their liver fat rose 2.5-fold and 40% crossed into fatty liver. Ten days off, all returned to baseline. The most ultraprocessed diets came with up to 31% higher prostate cancer risk. A study of more than 17,000 American men found the heaviest eaters of soda, packaged snacks and processed meat had 24 to 31% higher odds than the lightest. 1,513 pounds of dry-cured Italian pork jowl were recalled over Listeria. Prime Line Distributors pulled the cured guanciale, sold to restaurants and stores nationwide, after a routine import test found the bacteria. No illnesses reported yet. A strong correlation between cell tower proximity and cancer deaths. We came across an intriguing study out of Belo Horizonte, Brazil: cancer mortality rose the closer residents lived to cellular base stations. Trump blamed his bruised hand on bumping a table. Asked about the visible bruising, the president said he clipped it, used cream, and made an offhand aspirin remark. He takes a daily aspirin, which can worsen bruising.

I just learned something about rattlesnakes I cannot stop thinking about. They are immune to their own venom. Scientists at the University of Maryland finally worked out why: their blood is full of proteins that grab the venom's toxins and shut them down before they can do harm.
Then the team mixed those snake proteins together in the lab, and the combination worked about 10 times better than the antivenom hospitals use now, which is made from sheep. It has only been tested in the lab so far. But the best cure for a rattlesnake bite may have been inside the rattlesnake all along. |

When a climber fell in a North Carolina gorge and started losing blood faster than a helicopter could reach him, what saved him was a paramedic's legs. Will Soper grabbed a cooler of whole blood and ran. He covered 1.5 miles and climbed 1,000 feet through the gorge in 31 minutes, reached the injured climber, and got the transfusion started on the rocks.
