Children with it are born missing one cleanup enzyme. That enzyme clears a sugary waste from brain cells. Without it, the waste builds up until the cells die, usually by the mid-teens. Fayuvi, the new therapy, is a single IV infusion that gives cells a working copy of the missing gene, so they make the enzyme themselves. In the trial, treated kids held on to far more of their thinking than children with this disease normally do. Until this week, these families had nothing.         02  Berkeley banned candy at the checkout. People bought more candy anyway. Berkeley became the first US city to ban candy and sugary snacks from store checkout lines, and researchers tracked what changed. Across 71 stores, sugar sold at the register dropped about 70% in the first year. Soda and small candy packs fell in supermarkets. Drug stores did not change at all. But total candy sales across the city rose slightly over the same period. Interesting, though: people seem to have just gotten their fix elsewhere in the store, and a little more of it overall. Learn More         03  Intermittent fasting worked no better than eating on a normal schedule In a new randomized trial, adults with obesity and prediabetes were split into two groups for 12 weeks. One ate all their food inside a 10-hour window. The other ate on a normal schedule. Both groups ate the same number of calories. Both lost about the same amount of weight, roughly 2.5%. Hunger, blood sugar hormones, and inflammation came out about even too. The fasting window itself did nothing extra.         04  The measles count fight continues Pennsylvania has now tied four deaths this year to its measles outbreak, including an 18-year-old and a 40-year-old woman. RFK Jr.'s health department says the national measles death toll for 2026 is zero. Both cannot be true. Pennsylvania keeps counting cases, now more than 700 across 38 counties, and keeps counting bodies. Kennedy keeps insisting measles may not be what killed them. Neither side is blinking. This week, Pennsylvania escalated, asking the CDC to step in and settle it.         ✿ QUICK HITS — ON OUR RADAR Consumer Reports found plastic in every baby food it tested. All 15 puréed baby foods the group screened contained microplastics, the tiny plastic particles shed by packaging and processing, and 85% of a wider set had detectable lead. The government sets no safety limit for microplastics in food. The FDA just escalated a jalapeño recall to its most serious level. Taylor Farms' recall of 20 products, including guacamole, salsa, and dips, is now Class I over possible salmonella, covering 26 states. Class I means the FDA believes it could cause serious harm or death. The country's OB-GYNs broke with the federal government on pregnancy shots. ACOG, the main OB-GYN group, issued its own 2026-27 guidance urging COVID, flu, and RSV vaccines in pregnancy, directly against RFK Jr.'s CDC, which has scaled those recommendations back. Two official playbooks, pointing opposite ways. The FDA wants to cut drug-trial startup from years to months. Its new Expedited IND Pilot, part of an initiative dubbed Operation TrialBlazer, gives up to 10 drug programs a faster path into human testing. Faster access, or thinner safety checks, depending on where you sit. Black and green rice slowed the blood-sugar spike white rice causes.
